For hair, oxidation is an activator that you mix with your hair dye. Oxidation opens the hair scales and ensures that your hair absorbs the new color. For hair dyes, there are different strengths in terms of percentages of oxidation. It is usually between 1.9% and 12%. The most common options are 3%, 6%, 9% and 12%. With bleaching, it works differently and you usually choose the lowest percentage so that your blonde color lights up as brightly as possible with as little yellow and orange pigments as possible.

What percentage of oxidation should I use?

There are different oxidation that help you dye your hair. The different percentages are suitable for different results that you want to have when coloring the hair. When purchasing oxidation, you should look carefully at the percentage, which is also expressed in 'Vol.' or 'volume'. To make this clear, we have listed the different percentages and volumes below each other.

      • 1.5% = 5 volume

This is mainly used for toners, semi-colors and rinses. It is a mild percentage and often only needs to neutralize the color, color it or add shine to the hair.

      • 3% = 10 volume

This is used if you want to color the hair darker or if you want to color fine hair 1 color level lighter.

      • 6%= 20 volume

This is used for gray coverage, darkening colors and to lighten the hair 1 to 2 color levels.

      • 9%= 30 volume

This is used to lighten the hair by 3 to 4 shades.

      • 12%= 40 volume

Nowadays this is actually only used for Special Blond hair dyes with a color height of 11 or 12. This percentage is used as little as possible because it can damage your hair a lot.

What is the best care after coloring your hair?

After coloring your hair, it is important to take good care of your hair. Don’t forget to use toner . Did you dye your hair from dark to light? Then it is necessary to use toner. This will help you prevent brassiness in your hair. Using a purple toner will prevent a yellow tint in your hair, take for example theLee Stafford Purple Toning Set, while blue toner will prevent an orange tint, take for example theFudge Cool Brunette Blue Toning Duo Pack. Are you going from brown to blonde hair? Then that usually causes an orange tint, so blue toners are crucial for brunettes who want to go blonde. Toners also have the added benefit of adding shine to dyed hair.
